NPP Lawmaker Backs Kennedy Agyapong for 2028 Race
A senior member of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Stephen Amoah, says Kennedy Agyapong is the party’s best shot at winning the 2028 presidential election.
The Nhyiaeso MP explained that his support is based on Ghana’s voting patterns rather than the competence of other hopefuls like former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. Speaking on Citi FM, he argued that elections in Ghana are shaped as much by regional and demographic dynamics as by government performance.
Dr. Amoah acknowledged Bawumia’s achievements as head of the Economic Management Team during Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration but stressed that electoral success requires understanding where and how votes are won. In his view, those dynamics give Agyapong an edge in 2028.
His comments come as the NPP reflects on its 2024 defeat to John Mahama and begins to weigh its future leadership options. Agyapong, a businessman and media owner, previously contested the 2024 NPP flagbearer race, while Bawumia led the party’s ticket in that election after eight years as vice president.
The 2028 race will open a new chapter in Ghanaian politics, with Mahama term-limited and the NDC also searching for a fresh candidate.
Within the NPP, early endorsements like Amoah’s show that conversations about electability and strategy are already taking shape, even as the party works to rebuild after its recent loss.
